Users Guide to Volume III

This is the third and last volume of the Final Report of the Upper Great Lakes Connecting Channels Study. Volume I is the executive summary and Volume II is the main study report. Volume lII is the report appendices.

It consists of 40 individual reports with a total of about 5,150 pages of supporting documentation. These are primarily in the form of “Level II” workgroup reports. These workgroup reports formed the basis of material which was utilized by the writers of the main study report (Volume It). They were compiled from the approximately 170 “Level I” principal investigator reports.

Several of the principal investigator reports (Level I) are also included in this volume. These are: the ecological profiles for each channel; Trenton Channel, Detroit River, Lake St. Clair and St. Clair River modeling investigations; the St. Clair River deep well hydrogeological investigations; and urban runoff studies for Canadian urban areas. The other level I reports are in various stages of preparation for publishing by the agencies which funded the studies.
However, the pertinent information from these reports are included in the level II summaries.

Organization of Volume III

1. Reports

Volume III is divided into 5 major sections paralleling the format of Volume II. The first section includes the supporting information for the introductory chapters of the main report (chapters I to V). The Regulatory Task Force final report; Data Quality Management Workgroup summary report and Interlaboratory Performance Evaluation Integrated
reports; Modeling Workgroup summary report (along with 2 level I modeling reports); and sediment and urban runoff reports pertinent to all 4 channels are included in this section.

Sections 2 through 5 include workgroup reports and other pertinent information on a channel by channel basis. The St. Marys River data are presented first followed by the St. Clair
River, Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River.

The primary constituents of the geographic sections are the final reports of the biota, sediment, water quality, point source and nonpoint source workgroups. Other supporting documentation includes 4 ecological profiles (St. Cair River and Lake St. Clair are combined and included under the St. Clair River); the community profile for the Lake St. Clair
wetlands; Volume I of the “Hydrogeologic Study of the Freshwater Aquifer” at Sarnia (St. Clair River); and “The St. Clair River Pollution Investigation Report’.

There are no water quality workgroup reports specifically for the St. Marys River or Lake St. Clair. The water quality information summarized in Volume II of the UGLCCS for the St. Marys River was taken directly from Ontario Ministry of Environment principal investigator reports. The list of references in Volume II (Chapter VI) should be consulted for specific citations. Lake St. Clair water quality is based primarily on the quality of the outflow of the St. Clair River as compared to the Detroit River inflow quality.

Water quality data for the St. Clair River and the Detroit River are combined into one report. It is included with the St. Clair River material.

2. Packaging

The 5 sections of Volume III are packaged into 3 separate containers for ease of shipment and shelf storage. Each container (“Bankers Box’) is labeled. Box #1 includes introductory material (reports 1 through 9), box #2 contains the St. Marys and St. Clair rivers reports (reports 10 through 25) and box #3 contains the Lake St. Clair and Detroit River reports (reports 26 through 40). Each report is individually numbered on the inside front cover.
A bibliography of material included in Volume III is provided below. Each report is listed with regard to section, box number, and whether it is a Level I or II report.

Availability of Level I Reports

A number of the principal investigators reports, along with various other UGLCCS documents, have been placed in the UGLCC Library located at the U.S. EPA’s Large Lakes Research Station located at 9311 Groh Rd., Grosse lie, Michigan (48138). A bibliographic reference list of material deposited in the library (as of June 22, 1989) is attached to this
guide.

Included with each Listing is the name of the author and the author’s affiliated agency. Anyone interested in obtaining copies of this material should contact the appropriate agency. If copies are not obtainable then they will be made available for viewing at LLRS.
